CITYLIGHT COUNCIL BLUFFS STORY

Citylight Council Bluffs was birthed in prayer more than ten years ago when Erick Whigham sensed a call from God to launch a new work in Council Bluffs. He was studying political science at Northwestern College, took a course on church planting, and his life was changed as he prayed for Council Bluffs. All the professors said, “Don’t go there!” Yet God said, “Go there!” Nine years later, Doug Stevens - then a pastor for Citylight Midtown - sensed a similar call from God to plant a church in Council Bluffs. The two met for lunch, prayed with their wives, and called their friends. Within a couple months, a small group of people gathered on Labor Day weekend in 2015 to eat some burritos and dream about what God might do in Council Bluffs. It was clear that God’s timing was now and God’s people were bought in.

Citylight Council Bluffs began as a monthly prayer meeting with a couple City Groups. We laid a foundation of seeking the heart of God and hearing the voice of God. We went from random strangers to good friends to true family members. Those original City Groups multiplied, new friends found our sneaky meetings, and soon we sensed that we needed to look for a building and plan Sunday gatherings. Through the generosity of the Christian and Missionary Alliance and Citylight Midtown Church, we found and purchased a 16,000 square foot former school building and began Sunday core team gatherings. Friends in our core team have become Christians, renewed vision and purpose for their lives, healed of past hurts, reignited their love for Jesus’ church, swung hammers, and watched the 16,346 children in our church each week. Our passion is to multiply disciples and churches on the Iowa side of the river for the glory of Jesus!
